On the issues:Providing Transportation Choices

In this era of climate change, economic uncertainty, and over-dependence on foreign oil, we have to plan for and create viable transportation options. Every year we save $2.5 billion as a region because we can and do drive less.

As a co-founder of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA), I’ve worked to provide safe, attractive transportation choices for almost 20 years. I’ve championed efforts to give citizens real choices and the information they need to be able to save money and time. I’ve also led the re-thinking of how we use our transportation investments to clean our air, improve our economy and make our communities more vibrant and safe places to live and work.

I believe we can provide safe, affordable and sustainable transportation choices to every citizen of this region. But with limited resources, we must prioritize our investments to support safer streets and more efficient commutes, repairing our broken streets, highways and bridges but also investing in smart strategies like bike lanes, walking space, light rail, and buses. My pledge is to make these necessary investments in our current infrastructure and deliver transportation choices in a fiscally responsible way.

A Record of Success:

  • I helped found the Bicycle Transportation Alliance in 1990, working for 10 years (in part as Policy Director) to create safer streets throughout Portland and the state.
  • I spearheaded a plan to widen the sidewalks on the Hawthorne Bridge, making it safer and easier to bike and walk across.
  • I helped open two new max lines, increase bus service, and install bike lanes around the region.
