Rex files and makes his candidacy official
And we’re off! Rex filed paperwork today to run for Metro Council President!
“I’m proud of the progress we’ve made," he said, "but today we look towards building a better future – one in which together we can create thriving communities, protect our environment, and help move goods and people safely and quickly.”
Rex has already been hard at work, securing a broad base of support across our region’s unique interests. This includes endorsements from conservation and business leaders, and dozens of local community leaders. Early endorsements include Dave Fuller, Mayor of Wood Village, Jeremy Ferguson, Mayor of Milwaukie, Jim Wright, Mayor of Damascus, Tom Brian, Chair of Washington County, Judy Shiprack, Multnomah County Commissioner, Martin Gonzalez, Portland Public School Board, Nick Fish, Portland City Commissioner and many more.
Rex first joined the Metro Council in 2001. He is currently serving his third term and represents constituents from across North and Northeast Portland. On the Council he focused on creating jobs, improving transportation, and preserving our open space. For over 30 years Rex has been a strong community leader, working on various environmental and education-related issues.
Today, Rex emphasized the need to continue protecting farmlands and natural areas while ensuring economic growth. He also pledged to bring all interests together for transportation planning, call for investments in safer street, and increasing options for biker, walkers, light rail and buses. Additionally, Burkholder stressed the need for Metro to broaden how we plan for our future.

“Our work must be more than just good planning," he said. "It’s about how you live every day. We need to include the opportunities and values that aid families in living well. This includes strong community involvement, public health outcomes, community supported arts and culture, stronger social equity programs, access to local foods and stronger reductions in greenhouse gases.”
“Our future success depends on collaboration with all the people of the Metro region,” he added. “I’m committed to that future and humbly submit that I’m the candidate to lead us forward.”
